Marumushi newsmap

Newsmap is an application that visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator. A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap's objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.

Newsmap does not pretend to replace the googlenews aggregator. Its objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media. It is not thought to display an unbiased view of the news; on the contrary, it is thought to ironically accentuate the bias of it.

Swims

Ever walked out in the rain with your best pair of shoes? Ever wore your brand new fancy pair of shoes while having to walk through the mud? - Well, Mr.Swims has, and therefore he "invented" (well, industrialised) a galosh under the name of Swims.

a galosh is an overshoe that slips over the wearer's indoor footwear butis made of waterproof material to protect the more delicate materials of the shoe as well as the wearer's foot from cold and damp.

Tag Galaxy

Yet, another fun way of browsing through the massive stream of tags and pictures on Flickr. Not too very functional but fun and visual.

Love and the city

There's not too much to it (it being the content, sjah the goal is to get people to try a Smart out) but still, nice little carride through the belgian landscape. Just too bad they fucked up the typo using a typewriterfont, dudes please! never ever use a courier or whatever, at least not in in the imagery of this context ... sigh. But I kinda like the posters and the feel of it.

UPDATE: off course smartcourrier is part of the Smart guidelines and as a designer/AD it's hard neg to omit such a thing, n'est pas David ;)

Robinhoodfoodnonfood

Belgiƫ heeft een Robin Hood, je kent hem vast al, "de bonneman". Ook vandaag sloeg hij weer toe, en hij stuurt een boodschap de wereld in

Beste;

OF STOPPEN ? ? ? UW MEENING TELT ! ! !

Groetjes Robinhood...

Visited countries

Visited Countries is a small project demonstrating the power of manipulating the palette of a gif image on the fly. Here we start with a map of the world with each country in a different color. The script asks which country you have been to and sets the colors of those countries to red, the rest to green.

58 Twitter Apps (and then some)

http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifLo-fi librarian has posted a collection of Twitter apps that it has bookmarked, posted about or Tweeted. Lo-fi librarian thought it might be useful to have them all in one place. This is in no way comprehensive and as such Lo-fi librarian is sure that it has missed out some of your favourites.

It is inevitable that some defeat will enter even the most victorious in life, but the human spirit is never finished when it is defeated ... it is only finished when it surrenders.

Data Visualization and Infographics

Data Visualization and Infographics have always been my favourite. Weirdly it is a domain in graphic design that is not yet so appreciated as other domain (such as motion, illustration or webdesign) although they closely relate. I guess that's mostly to be explained because Data Visualization and Infographics come from 'originate' (or were formerly mostly used) in the science-field. Scientists (and offcourse sociologists and researchers of various fields as well) needed it and worked with them without knowing design or consulting designers about it. It was a purely functional 'thing' they must have thought, anyway that is all starting to change (or has allready I suppose, Data Visualization and Infographics starts to emerge as a master degree in universities all over the world) - after all form doesn't always follow function, form can be used as an extra explanatory guide to the function. Or better, design can (or rather) must serve the data in order to make the information more legible and/or readable. If design serves to easier access for the data displayed, then it is certainly worthwhile examining the different design-possibilities for the Data Visualization. (check Query bursts)

53 CSS-Techniques You Couldn’t Live Without

CSS is important. And it is being used more and more often. Cascading Style Sheets offer many advantages you don’t have in table-layouts - and first of all a strict separation between layout, or design of the page, and the information, presented on the page. Thus the design of pages can be easily changed, just replacing a css-file with another one. Isn’t it great? Well, actualy, it is.

Over the last few years web-developers have written many articles about CSS and developed many useful techniques, which can save you a lot of time - of course, if you are able to find them in time. Below you’ll find a list of techniques we , as web-architects, really couldn’t live without. They are essential and they indeed make our life easier. Let’s take a look at 53 CSS-based techniques you should always have ready to hand if you develop web-sites.

Font Clock

The Font Clock is a 21st century take on the British 24 hour clock design icon. Twelve different fonts are printed within the mechanism of the clock providing a random, mixed display of graphic language within a single time piece. Font clock is offered in three sizes.

Google PageRank

Google PageRank: What Do We Know About It?
Everybody is using it, but (almost) nobody really knows how it works. Google PageRank is probably one of the most important algorithms ever developed for the Web. With billions of existing pages and millions of pages generated every day, the search issue in the Web is more complex than you probably think it is. PageRank, only one of hundreds of factors used by Google to determine best search results, helps to keep our search clean and efficient. But how is it actually done? How does Google PageRank work, which factors do have an impact on it and which don’t? And what do we really know about PageRank?

In this article they've put the facts straight.

OFFF 2008 - Networking

You might think an OFFF event in Lisbon is all about the looking and the party, and not a chance some-one'd be able to meet-n-greet some interesting belgian agencies or designers right, you feel me comming, you guessed wrong! First and all I met The Infamous Rizon Parein at the Soulwax party, he was accompanied with them guys of Glossy.tv who feature a magical strong design portfolio I must admit, working for several ad-agencies across the country working cool clients like Quinze&Milan, Nike, Nokia, Playstation, CultureClub and many others (pictures at end of this post) I also saluted Mr.Henry at the bar and was additionally accompanied with a bunch of designers I was travelling with of course.

This is Glossy.tv ! >

OFFF 2008 - Joshua Davis

Although I've seen this guy talk before, it was really a refreshing and delightfull talk, he is and stays the master of entertainment (amongst designers). Joshua Davis is a designer writing generative programs that output designs. He generates what couldn't ever be done by hand manually. Rules and parameters define the output and are essentially the essence of the designproces. Triggering the proces but not being able to control it is what Josh loves in his way of working, inspired loosely on the conceptual work of Jackson Pollock
