Data visualisation of a social network

For his final year project in information design, Felix Heinen created an amazing set of visualizations of different aspects of a social network. Two big (200 x 90 cm - 80 x 36 inches) posters show the variety and attitudes of members from an internet community like MySpace.

On the first poster you can see the functions used, as well as additional information, such as age, educational background, family status, gender and how often they are logged in. In a glimpse, a view into the key demographic data available for every member's profile.

The second poster gives you an overview of the geographic location of all members, based on a world map. The aim was to provide the management team with a visualization tool that would allow a better understanding of the community members, rather than a just a simple scan of their database. Felix has also developed a flash based interactive tool that allows users to navigate through all the collected data.

Rent a wife, sold out

I posted the release of Rent a wife earlier, now Digimedia reports that Emakina pulls the plug out of this project because ethical issues...

Hoofdstuk afgesloten. En 600.000 bezoekers op een maand…

Collective voice

A social, public display of crowd moods & feelings during an large-scale event: people send SMS to a special number and the messages are then displayed with a tree-like generative graphic software. As soon as a new message arrives a new branch blossoms. as the event unfolds, layers of texts gradually build up a flowing foliage of collective memory.

Ultima Vez

Ultima Vez was founded in 1986 as the company and organisation of choreographer, director and filmmaker Wim Vandekeybus.
Since its foundation, Ultima Vez has intensively developed its activities as an international contemporary dance company with a strong base in Brussels and Flanders.
While, during the first years, Ultima Vez focussed mainly on the production, promotion and distribution of the artistic work of Wim Vandekeybus (dance, theatre, film), the organisation has integrated many other activities.
Ultima Vez has always functioned as an autonomous and independent structure, relying however on a network of co-producers and partners to realise its projects.

ClusterBall: Visualizing Wikipedia

This visualisation shows the structure of Wikipedia category pages and their interconnections. Centered in the graph is the parent node, in this case, Humans. Pages that are linked from this parent are rendered inside the ball. Finally pages that are linked to the latter (secondary) nodes are rendered on the outer ring. Links between category pages are represented by edges, which are color coded by depth from the parent node. Nodes are clustered such that edge lenghts are minimized. This forces highly connected groups of pages to clump togheter, essentially forming topical groups.
